MyanmarMyanmar is a multi-ethnic state with 153 different ethnic-groups. In power is a military regime that is criticised for its policies and human rights violations. The regime concept of a uniform national state leads to autonomy movements within several ethnic-groups. In 1996 Myanmar opened up from its 40-year long isolation and opened the country to restricted tourism. Information services, such as Internet and other media sources, are heavily state controlled. A key symbolic figure of the democracy movement in Myanmar is the Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest. She is the opposition leader of the "National League for Democracy" (NLD), which won the 1990 election. However the military junta never accepted the result and refused to allow the NLD to take power. |
